World Press Freedom Day 3rd May

Why is it important? A free press fights for truth and accountability, and informs us lowly voters so that we may understand and express our views. Journalists die hunting for truth in Gaza and Ukraine. Others face physical and online threats for their work to shed light on inconvenient environmental truths, or the rights of women and other marginalised groups. Laura Bates, a brave activist for women’s rights, receives death threats daily, simply for highlighting the plight of women in our society. We need press freedom and independence to shine a light on how systems oppress, and how big business controls.

In our bookselling world there are still books that are banned, there are voices that push to the fore with backing of big money, and voices that are stifled. Even closer to home, I saw an instagram post this week from an independent publisher from whom we buy books directing customers to Amazon (IKR..!). And, who really owns Waterstones: that’s an eye-opening one. And in our lovely town of Alton, who actually owns the high street? Still working on that one.

Support independent press. Support local newspapers. Support independent voices.
