Publishing Services

What is Goldfinch Publishing?

Goldfinch already provides support, teaching, advice and services related to creative writing. We are now moving into offering direct support and services to authors in publishing. This includes two main routes:

  1. Traditional publishing: we will soon be inviting submissions from authors interested in being published by Goldfinch Publishing. This is a new venture, in which we anticipate publishing just one or two books in 2026/7. We believe that a traditional route with one of the big publishers is not right for every book, and that many great stories deserving of publication may be better served by a smaller press. If we take on a project, we will work with the author in editing, production, printing and publication. We will not ask for financial contribution from authors.

  2. Author services: we now offer support services to those taking a self-publishing route. These are paid services, distinct and separate from the traditional publishing described above where Goldfinch is not the publisher of the work but is helping the author to be the publisher of their own work. Self publishing is a proven, viable and potentially rewarding option for many authors, but there are elements of the process that not all writers are suited to or interested in, and this is where we can help. From proofreading, typesetting and cover design, through to eBook and print book production and launch, we will engage the right people and walk with you through the process.

Author Services.

  • Editing.

Developmental (structural editing) and copy editing are essential stages in bringing your work up to a professional standard.

  • Proofreading.

Both pre-production (before typesetting) and post-production proofreading ensures consistency of style and picks up issues with paragraph formats, page numbering etc.

  • Cover Design.

Books need covers. For eBooks, just the front is required, and for print books a wrap-around cover including spine. Cover design is crucially important to get right, which means a focus on communicating genre, and providing something that fits with the expectations of the marketplace - and a book that sits well with others of its genre.

  • Publishing.

Manuscripts need to be designed and produced in specified formats, which vary depending on the printer and distribution approach chosen.

Editing & Proofreading

Your first job is to get the words down, splurge out that first draft in all its beauty and ugliness. Disrespect boundaries and conventions, let your imagination run wild. But then it’s time to edit. First comes your self-edit. Start the process of uncovering and polishing the gems. Get your character arcs working for the story, bring the sub-plots together in service of the main plot line. When you get to the stage when you’ve edited it to within an inch of its life and you can no longer see the wood for the trees, and you’ve done as much as you can, then it’s time to bring in the professionals. Expert editing will bring your story to life. We will connect you with one of our pool of editors in the extended Goldfinch team, and help you realise your ambition for your characters and their journey.

Why bother with editing?

Every book on the shelves at Goldfinch has been through many rounds of editing, whichever publishing route those books have taken. For traditionally published books, editing will have been done in-house at the publishers, in partnership with the author. For self-published work, the editing needs to be of the same standard if those books are to sit alongside trad published works, which means commissioning professionals. Editing drives clarity, coherence, and impact. Our services include the editing required at every stage, from structural (developmental) editing to copy editing and proofreading to ensure your manuscript reaches the required quality for published works.

If you partner with Goldfinch for your editing, you will be able to meet your editor at the bookshop if this suits you, develop a working relationship in-person rather than rely on a virtual professional relationship. The bookshop and the Goldfinch extended family of readers, writers and professionals, provides a perfect environment conducive to your perfecting of your manuscript.

Structural (Developmental) Editing

Structural editing takes a step back, zooming out to get a focus on the big picture elements of your manuscript. This type of editing is all about refining the structure, plot, characters, and overall flow of the story. Do the character arcs work? Is the plot coherent? Is the pacing right? Your editor will provide feedback on all these elements to make sure your structure provides a firm foundation on which to build your narrative. This type of editing is not always necessary if the structure is already strong, and the self-edit stage has been thorough, and / or your book is a sequel and the format is relatively clear, but developmental editing can be a crucial step to enhance your manuscript by bringing clarity to your storytelling direction.

Copy Editing

Copy editing is the editing stage after the big-picture elements are resolved, your story structure has been nailed down, and your characters are nicely travelling through their arcs. A copy edit hones in on the finer details. This includes correcting grammar, spelling, and punctuation but more critically, it ensures consistent style and tone. A copy editor examines sentence structure, word choice, and overall language. Their goal is to polish your writing to a professional standard, ensuring that every sentence is clear, concise, and error-free. Copy editing elevates your manuscript by eliminating distractions caused by errors or inefficiency in language, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in your story.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final step in the editing process, focusing on catching any remaining errors before publication. Both pre-production proofreading (before typesetting) and post-production proofreading are key stages, the latter potentially requiring a lighter touch. Proofreaders correct spelling, punctuation and grammar that have slipped through the editing stages, ensure consistency of style and pick up issues with paragraph formats, page numbering etc. A proofreader ensures that your manuscript adheres to industry standards and is ready for publication.

Book Interior Design

Manuscripts need to be designed and produced in specified formats, which vary depending on the printer and distribution chosen. The work required in typesetting and producing a book will vary from the straightforward (and therefore cheaper) to the more complex. Guide pricing is provided below, but contact us with information on your project and we will make sure you are guided to the best pathway.

Book interior design and ISBN: The requirements for the content and layout of the interior of your book depend on your strategy and plans for its publication - eBook and print, or just print? And where the book sits in the wider body of your work - a standalone, or a part of a series? We can develop appropriate ‘front matter’ (information, copyright, contents) and ‘back matter (marketing, links to files etc) and provide a registered ISBN, copyright information, and registration with Nielsen.

Formatting - Format the interior of the book in line with current industry and market expectations for your project, and produce eBook files from the final formatted manuscript after author sign off. We are familiar with all formats required by different sales outlets (ePub, MOBI and PRINT) ready for upload to various platforms.

Cover Design

Your cover is arguably as important as the content of the book itself, especially for self-published authors. You want your cover to communicate the genre of your novel, not necessarily to wow your readers with unique and innovative artwork. Your book needs to stand up amongst thousands of others in ‘thumbnail’ format online and on a bookshelf next to other books of a similar genre. You want your prospective readers to see your cover and immediately know whether this is the kind of book they want to read, or not.

There are many designers out there who will produce an efficient, competitively priced book cover for around £500 or less (check out ‘fiverr’ or ‘99designs’). These routes offer good options for many people. You can of course go large and opt for a bespoke design for upwards of a few thousand.

Our approach is holistic. We have excellent knowledge of book covers in different genres in the market, and, from the work we do with publishers, we know how the trends are changing and evolving.

  • With your input and your ideas, we will research the market for your genre using our insider bookshop knowledge, identify comparison titles and provide an initial proposal (three different variations) for cover concepts to discuss with you. At this stage, if we think your cover would benefit from bespoke illustration, we will include this as one of the proposals.

  • We will then agree with you the concept to be developed to a final design, and then get to work finalising your cover with appropriate front and back information for designs for both eBook and print book (or just the front cover for eBook only options).

  • We will present the final design for your approval and allow for a further iteration if required.

  • We will deliver files in print-ready format for eBook and print publication (including raw photoshop files if required).

Distribution & Ready to Buy

We will set up your distribution system for eBook sales outlets. There are a number of options for this depending on the way you want to manage the process. It could be done individually through the main outlets (Kindle, KOBO, Apple, Google), or through an aggregator distributor that manages supply and sales for all outlets. Then, set up print book distribution for online and bookshop sales outlets though Ingram Spark (for distribution to bookshops and libraries) and KDP for Amazon online ‘print-on-demand’ sales. This will include a bit of coaching so that you may take on the monitoring and administration required to manage your sales after this stage is complete.

What is Distribution?

Once your book is ready, typeset, polished, covered, shiny and ready to buy, we need to get it to all the different shop-fronts, both digital and bricks-and-mortar. For this, it needs a book ISBN and registration with Nielsen BookScan. Then we can get it (in the right format) into eBook stores such as KOBO and KDP, and in print for distribution to bookshops (via Ingram and Gardners wholesalers) including Waterstones (and Goldfinch of course).
